Design Notes with Helen Green Design | Surrey Project Published: 02-04-2023 To create a great house really depends on great clients whose vision, energy and time will ultimately define the architecture and interior design. Set in the beautiful Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this residential estate has been extended and renovated to create an outstanding family home spanning over 25,000 sq ft. Our clients shared their holistic view of the architecture, interiors and landscape design during the initial design meeting; this was a chance to create a truly sympathetic relationship between the house and the surroundings promoting the laws of harmony and proportion. The vision for this renovation was directed by our clients whose unwavering commitment and unique vision has transformed it from a list of needs, wants and aesthetic preferences into a truly distinctive and enduring family home. They appointed Humphrey Munson and Helen Green Design to assist with undertaking this transformation and we caught up with Creative Lead at HGD, Alexandra Jurkiewicz, to discuss the interior design in more detail… The clients always had a strong vision from the start, so the original brief for Helen Green Design was to create a home that felt welcoming and that the family felt connected to. And so this connection was very important from the beginning; there is huge meaning in all of the rooms within the home whether it’s a nod to Scottish roots, or a colour palette inspired by a favourite holiday – this is a home that the clients wanted to walk into and feel instantly at ease with. Describing this particular project in a nutshell is tricky; it’s a classically designed house with a considered and thoughtful layering of finishes, textures and materials. When you walk in to any of the rooms, you feel that there is an organic sense of space, that everything has been carefully designed to fit the scale and proportion perfectly. Describing the design process as ‘pure joy’, the team at Helen Green led by Alex, have executed the design and installation of the interior design to the highest standard. Hours and hours across several years were spent in design development with input from the clients throughout in creating bespoke pieces to suit the house perfectly. Given the scale of the rooms in the home, most of the furniture was custom made for this project with upholstery pieces in particular designed to suit the need and function of the room. This incredible sofa design was created for this more formal drawing room which has an unusual shape; it works so well creating an easy sense of flow around the room as a whole but neatly divides it into two, thereby creating distinct areas to relax and unwind. The formal dining room brings in a slightly bolder design using pattern to create a little energy in the space so when you walk in you sort of say ‘wow’ but its under your breath. Nothing about this house is ostentatious, it’s a classic English country house with a modern and young family feel to it. The dining room is an exquisitely designed space with incredible views across the gardens. Beautifully curated tableware with plenty of personality makes each dinner party feel so individual and special with integrated lighting throughout to create the perfect ambience. The catering kitchen by HM is located just across the hallway through a secret door (not shown) to service the dining room. A favourite family space is the snug which is just located off the main open plan kitchen and dining area. Featuring comfortable but durable fabrics, we love the softness and layering of finishes including the textured wallpaper which instantly makes this space feel warm and cosy. The ground floor guest bathroom is a nod to private member’s club Annabel’s with its indulgent pink onyx, detailed wallpaper and brass hardware throughout creating the most exceptional powder room. A beautifully executed and fun room for guests to use, this inspiring space was completely directed by the clients who wanted a gentle reminder of their years spent living in London. The master bedroom is a triumph of quietly comfortable luxury. This is truly a sanctuary in which to relax after the day is done. The children’s rooms are thoughtfully decorated so that there is longevity and flexibility as the children get older. Again, durable finishes are key in these rooms, but the neutral and adaptable palette is perfect for now and later on too.Storage and planning have been integral throughout the design process for Helen Green Design. Thoughtfully specified fabrics and wallpapers pair perfectly. We love that the overall design aesthetic of the house is threaded through each of the rooms while still retaining their own personality. This guest room has beautiful detailing throughout. This was an incredible project to be part of, and the property perfectly tailors Helen Green Design’s timeless aesthetic to balance a classic contemporary home in a country setting whilst being functional for all family needs.
